Type of Interactive Broker Trading Platforms

Interactive Broker provides their clients with multiple platforms to trade at their comfort. I have listed the platforms available and posted some of my findings as I navigate my way figuring out how to use their platforms.

Note:
Please be sure to have sufficient funds in the currency you are trading in. If not, charges from your margin account applies.

What happens if I trade a product denominated in a currency which I do not hold in my account?

How to Convert from Base Currency to Trading Currency in Interactive Broker

Interactive Broker requires to convert the base currency, SGD to USD before you are able to trade US equities.

Buy USD, sell SGD.

As seen on Quick Trade Platform.

Select "Forex" tab --> Key in "USD" hit enter --> select "USD.SGD" --> key in amount in USD you want to FX for --> amend Limit Price if desired --> submit Order

6 Steps to a Trading Decision

1. State your Forecast

- important to be specific about price of stock and time frame
e.g. XXX stock will rise from $10 to $15 in 20 days. Today is 40 days to expiration.

2. Calculate the Implied Volatility

- volatility percentage in the option pricing formula
- Stock price
- Strike price
- Dividends
- Interest Rates
- Days to expiration
- Volatility

Trading Strategies

1. Stock- Oriented Strategy - Covered Straddle

- Normally price rise, sell shares to realise profit. Price drop, buy more shares.

- BUT Alternative to waiting for price rally/ dip --> can use COVERED STRADDLE
--> call + put with the same strike price and expiration date

LONG STRADDLE

- Buy both call + put
- depending on the underlying stock's direction of movement, either the call will profit more than the put (vice versa)

Option Price Behaviour

1. Strike Price - if the stock price don't move beyond the strike price, then the option will expire worthless

2. Time to Expiration (time decay) - the longer the time, the higher the option price

- the most time decay happens as option is near expiry

3. Effect of Interest Rate on short- term options prices is small

rise in i/r --> rise in CALL, drop in PUT

Option Strategy - Long Stock; Stock UP/ DOWN since Purchase - what next?

Long Stock, Stock UP since purchase

Next steps

1. Take no action - monitor price and change strategy if price outlook sours
2. If want to sell at my Target Price --> write Covered Calls
    - look for Strikes = stock target price, short time to expiration, high option premium
    - at least gain premium from selling
3. Buy Protective Put to protect downside, but require cash outlay to purchase
    - protective put will "kick in" when price drops to strike price
    - "insurance" is valid until expiration date

Passive Income Ideas that Anyone Can Try

1. Be a long- term, passive investor

Since my investment horizon is long (meaning I expect to be working for at least the next 30 years), I have the luxury to be aggressive in my investment choices. However, looking at my current state of income and savings, apparently it is rather pathetic. Hence, I have to be pragmatic in my approach.

Below pointers are what I have implemented:

- Buying REITS to collect dividends
- Buying Blue Chip stocks as they are more stable and some even pay out dividends
- Buying into Indexes and ETF's
Subscribing to Peter Lynch's concept of Beating the Street for my investments

Cheatsheet for ETF Selection

1. Fund's Longevity
How many years have the fund been effective. Longer history suggests stability and track record to see the results. That said, past data does not imply future performance.

2. Fund Size
At least USD 100 million AUM (Assets under Management).
Larger AUM is better.

3. Expense Ratio
The % of funds that the AM (Asset Manager can withdraw each year to pay for the fund's operating expenses.
Lower, better. Vanguard is known for having low expense ratios.

4. Tracking Error
The deviation from the underlying index.
Less is better.
